Goodbye Poem

When I left my first job, I was to give a speech. Instead, I prepared a poem (or, rather a rhyme):

Time has wings;
it changes us as it swings;
it surprises us at what it brings.
But it leaves behind memories;
some sweet and some as travesties.

We move on;
we keep going.
Perhaps to think later;
over what we have been doing.

In the bid to stay abreast;
we neglect some basic trends.
Let us pledge to keep it balanced;
between health, relations and talent.

Thank you all for being there;
it was a pleasure coming here!

Miles to go before I sleep?

Right from the childhood, we have been hearing about Jawaharlal Nehru’s fascination with Robert Frost’s poem ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’, especially the last four lines:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

And we have been tricked into believing that we need to keep our eyes focused on the target and not be disillusioned by the distracting beauty in our path. Does it really hold?

Those with  some experience would realize that most of the times it’s not the destination that matters but the journey. And that we need to really live each moment and not be bogged down too much by whether a target is achieved or not.

But can we be preposterous enough to dismiss the great poem by Mr.Frost? Perhaps, we need not be. After all,  we can’t always be flowing like water and let the soothing breeze direct our path. We need to have some goals and be focused to achieve those in time-bound manner. And all the while, we only need to remember to keep making some time for appreciation and enjoyment of the path as well.
